Brazil's presidential candidates hold final rallies before Sunday's vote
Lula and Flavio close their campaigns in major cities as polls show them level, with about a fifth of first-round voters having abstained.
What to know
- Both candidates scheduled rallies in major cities on the last day of campaigning.
- Roughly 20% of the electorate abstained in the first round, leaving the outcome uncertain.
- Opinion polls put the two contenders neck and neck ahead of the second round.
Brazil's two presidential candidates spent the final day of campaigning holding rallies in major cities ahead of Sunday's second-round vote. Lula and Flavio are competing in a contest that opinion polls describe as too close to call, with the campaigns drawing to a close after weeks of events across the country.
The result remains open in part because about a fifth of voters abstained in the first round, according to the reporting. A final debate and published polling have framed the closing stretch. It is not yet known how those abstentions will break, and the campaigns have not said what they expect from the remaining undecided electorate.
