About

A desk, not a wire

Meridian reads the public feeds of newsrooms on three continents, writes its own short brief on what they reported, and sends you to their article for the full account.

What this site does

Every item here begins as a published report by another newsroom. Meridian writes a fresh brief on it — a headline, a standfirst, three things to know and two short paragraphs — and puts the original one click away. The brief is written to be read in forty seconds. The reporting it points to is where the detail, the quotations and the photography live.

Nothing on this site is original reporting. Meridian employs no correspondents and witnesses no events. It is an editing layer over other people’s journalism, and it says so on every page.
